How do the new pension rules impact me?

A new tax year brings a fresh set of allowances, and at his recent Budget, the Chancellor increased what was on offer for pension savers. So, what are the changes, and how will they impact your own finances?

Annual pension allowances

The changes that will affect most people are the limits on what can be paid into a pension each tax year.

The standard annual allowance for pensions is now £60,000. That’s 50% up on last year’s limit of £40,000.

Understanding your SIPP at death

One of the great tax advantages of a Self-Invested Personal Pension is that it allows you to pass on your pension to your beneficiaries on your death. Your beneficiaries can normally choose to take the pension fund as a lump sum or leave it invested in a SIPP.

Tax benefits

A SIPP offers two main tax benefits. First, your investments will grow free from capital gains and income tax. Second, and more importantly, when paying into your SIPP, you receive government tax relief. How much depends on your circumstances – bearing in mind that pension and tax rules could change.

Giving money from your pension to charity at death

Customer query:

“I am thinking about how I can make bequests from my estate to my favourite charities and wondered if I can gift some of my pension in this way and whether or not this makes sense, given my estate might have to pay inheritance tax. I’m interested in the pluses and minuses around giving money to charity on death from my pension”.

There are certainly good inheritance tax breaks on offer if you decide to leave money to charity when you die, so let’s cover that off first.
